Moorish City of Silves
Portimao

by coach & on foot
Delve deep into the rich history of an area inhabited since Palaeolithic times and which is home to one of the best-preserved castles in the Algarve. Once the Moorish capital of the Algarve, Silves is today a tranquil town of terracotta rooftops, fragrant citrus groves, and lush vineyards sitting on the banks of the Arade River. Medieval Silves feels a long way from the touristy Algarve coast.
Following an approximately 30-minute drive to Silves, you will embark on a guided walk through the cobbled streets. It is quite a steep climb from the bottom part of the town to the Moorish Fort atop the hill.
This Moorish Fort, or Fortaleza, is situated on the highest point above the town. The fortress boasts a beautiful garden as well as a complete set of sandstone walls and impressive towers, with beautiful panoramic views over Silves.
Leaving the fortress behind, you will continue your walk to the Gothic Sé Catedral de Silves, which is famous for its intriguing Manueline entrance. Today, this cathedral is considered by many to be the most important Gothic building in the Algarve. It still sports some of its original grandeur despite damage caused by the Great Earthquake of 1755. Be sure to go inside to see the tombs of bishops and crusaders who died taking Silves back from the Moors.
Following this, you’ll have some time to enjoy at leisure where you can explore or browse the local shops before rejoining your coach for the return drive to Portimão. Keep your eyes peeled as you leave Silves for the impressive 16th-century ‘Cross of Portugal’ which stands approximately 3m (9.8ft) high and is unusually made from a type of limestone which does not exist in the Algarve region.
