Discover the wilder, quieter side of Porto Santo on a guided mountain walk to Pico do Facho, the island’s highest peak at 517m (1696ft). Named after the signal fires (‘fachos’) that were once lit to warn of pirate attacks, this summit offers some of the most spectacular views across the island and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean.
Your experience begins with a short transfer from the tender landing stage to the starting point of the trail. From there, you will set off on foot along natural mountain paths, surrounded by endemic vegetation, rolling hills, and volcanic rock formations. Your guide will share stories of the island’s history, geology, and rural life as you ascend.
At the summit of Pico do Facho, you will take some time to admire sweeping 360-degree views of Porto Santo’s golden coastline, the small islets offshore, and on clear days you may even see Madeira Island in the distance. This is a truly rewarding hike for nature lovers, photographers, and active explorers. After time to rest and take photos, begin your descent and transfer back to the tender landing stage.
