Covadonga & Cangas de Onis

This full day experience will immerse you in Asturian culture during visits to historical Covadonga and the charming village of Cangas de Onis.

Your experience begins with a drive through Gijon, introducing you to some of the sights of the city, before continuing with an approximately 1h30min scenic drive to reach Covadonga.

Covadonga is a religious sanctuary, considered to be one of the most important and historic sites depicting the story of Spain. It was here that the reconquest of Spain began, led by King Pelayo and his troops. Today, Covadonga is a place of pilgrimage for devotees to Our Lady of Covadonga, known locally as ‘La Santina’. Upon arrival, your guide will lead you on a visit to the Holy Cave and Basilica where La Santina is worshipped, as well as treating you to magnificent views of the Picos de Europa mountain range.

Following this, you will rejoin your coach for a short drive through the wonderful green landscape of Asturias to a local restaurant, where you will enjoy a three-course lunch including a glass of red wine.

Fully refreshed, you will continue your journey with a short drive to the charming town of Cangas de Onis, the first capital of Asturias. Your guide will lead you on a leisurely walk to introduce you to some of the highlights of the town, including the Statue of King Pelayo, the Pintu Palace and Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Church. You will also see the famous three-arched Roman bridge from which a reproduction of the well-known Victory Cross proudly hangs.

Schedule permitting, you will enjoy some free time to browse the local shops for a souvenir of your visit before rejoining your coach for the approximately 1h30min return drive to Gijon.
