Your sightseeing journey begins as you board your coach and travel a scenic, short drive to Vegueta, the renowned historic birthplace of Las Palmas. You will disembark your coach near the Plaza Santa Ana, the entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide will regale you with tales of how this once-tiny town was home to conquistadors, the Portuguese, the Dutch and even pirates through the centuries.

During a guided walk through the old town you will feel the centuries unfold as you walk through a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets which hold magnificent houses with wooden balconies and beautiful patios, and buildings such as the 17th century Casa Regental. This was the home of Gran Canaria’s High Court of Law. Nearby is the Bishop’s Palace, whose original façade dates back 500 years.

Your fascinating experience continues with one of Vegueta’s most lauded gems, the Cathedral Santa Ana. Construction began in 1497 but took 400 years to complete resulting in a pleasing marriage of Gothic, Neoclassical and Renaissance architectural styles. Upon entering the cathedral you will see that the stunning interior was created to resemble Gran Canaria’s famous palm trees.

Afterwards you will enjoy some free time to further explore the old town before reboarding your coach for the short drive back to your ship.
