Lying northwest of the Nile Delta, Alexandria is the largest port in the Arab Republic of Egypt, one of the major summer resorts on the Mediterranean Sea. Founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BCE, Alexandria is the shining Pearl of the Mediterranean.

Immortalizing Alexander’s name, the city flourished beyond all expectations into a prominent cultural, intellectual and economic metropolis, the remains of which are still evident to this day. It was the renowned capital of the Ptolemies and the scene of the most thrilling drama, involving Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony and Octavius.

Your coach will depart from the pier for a drive through colourful, busy streets viewing sometimes tired, but beautiful architecture and experiencing the charming aura and nostalgia of yesteryear. You will pass the bronze equestrian statue of Muhammad Ali, widely considered as the founder of modern Egypt. You will also pass the elegant marble edifice dedicated to the Unknown Soldier.

Your first stop will be for a visit to the eerie, yet intriguing Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, one of Alexandria’s most fascinating historical sites. This unique burial site dating from the 2nd century CE. As you wander through the subterranean chambers, you will see stunning tombs, sarcophagi, and sculptures that tell stories from the past.

Your next stop will be a visit to the Greco Roman Museum, dedicated to the antiquities and civilization of Egypt during the Greek and Roman eras, from the 3rd century BCE to the 3rd century CE. The building itself is an architectural gem, combining elements of both Egyptian and Greek styles. The museum’s collection includes sculptures, mosaics, pottery, jewellery and more providing insights into the daily life, religious practices and artistic achievements of the Greco-Roman period.

Continuing with your city drive, a short photo stop will be made to view Qait Bey Fort, built on the original site of Alexandria’s ancient lighthouse; and the impressive Abu Al Abbas Mosque, one of the city’s most important historic mosques and a beautiful monument to Alexandria’s most beloved Muslim saint – Al Mursi Abu Al Abbas.

Lunch will be enjoyed at a local restaurant.

Fully refreshed, your exploration of Alexandria continues with a visit to Bibliotheca Alexandria. Inaugurated in 2002, it is built on the same site as the famous Library of Alexandria which was established by Ptolemy in 288 BC. The library was designed to be one of the most unique and unusual architectural structures of the modern world, reflecting the architectural genius of the 21st century. You will enjoy an inside visit, guided by the library’s own guides.

Rejoining your coach you will drive along the scenic corniche, the beachfront boulevard as you make your way to your final stop, the famous Montaza Gardens where the summer residence of the late King Farouk is situated. Take a stroll with your guide through the gardens and view the palace, still used by the present government for official state functions.
