Saint Maarten, Saint Martin to the French, is 37 square miles with two governments, two flags, two official languages and more restaurants per square mile than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean. It was divided in 1648 between the Netherlands and France along a boundary that has never been formally enforced. The story of how it was drawn is one of the Caribbean's most charming pieces of folklore: a French sailor and a Dutch sailor stood back-to-back on the beach and walked in opposite directions around the coastline. Where they met became the border. The Frenchman, who drank wine on the way, covered more ground. The Dutchman, who drank jenever, walked in a somewhat less straight line. The French got the larger share. The Dutch got Philipsburg. Both sides have spent the centuries since making the most of it.

Front Street, Philipsburg
One of the Caribbean's finest duty-free stretches; jewellery, electronics, perfume, spirits and the local Guavaberry liqueur, a spirit made from a berry that grows only on this island and found nowhere else in the world. Dutch colonial buildings painted ochre and coral, Great Bay beach beginning at the far end of the road. They negotiate on price here, so come prepared.
Maho Beach
The runway of Princess Juliana International Airport ends directly above the sand. Planes pass so close overhead that the jet blast hits the beach. It is unique, and unlike anything else in the Caribbean.
Simpson Bay Lagoon
One of the largest inland lagoons in the Caribbean, ringed by luxury villas and mega-yachts, straddling both sides of the island. Beautiful by water.
Marigot and the French table
Cross to the French side and everything changes: real croissants, a covered market selling local spices and guavaberry liqueur, and waterfront restaurants where lunch extends into the afternoon without anyone remarking on it.

Yes. Front Street and Great Bay Beach are within easy walking distance of the pier.
