Voyage to Viking Island – Legacy of Tore Hund

Step back in time with a visit to Bjarkøy, once the home of legendary Viking chieftain Tore Hund, on this experience combining history and myth.

Your journey begins with a coach drive from Harstad to Stornes ferry terminal, where you will take the ferry to the island of Grytøya. During the crossing, you will have the opportunity to appreciate the fjord scenery, before rejoining your coach to take the sub-sea tunnel to your final destination, Bjarkøy.

Tore Hund was an influential member of one of the most powerful families in Northern Norway during the Viking Age – the Bjarkøy clan. An accomplished Viking, he led several expeditions towards Russia and the White Sea, and is reported to have killed Norway’s patron saint, King Olav II, in the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030.

During your exploration of the island that was his home, you will visit Selshevneren – an impressive 15m (49ft) monument of Tore Hund’s spear, marking that Bjarkøy is still considered his realm.

You will also visit the site of the great boathouse – the ship is believed to have been up to 30m (98ft) long, and rowed by 40 men.

Finally, filled with memories of wonderful views and tales of Viking battles, it is time to return to Harstad by coach and ferry.
