Bill Tancred

Guest Speaker - Sport

William `Bill` Tancred is a leading sports administrator, academic and former international athlete. He competed at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics in the discus and won bronze and silver medals in successive Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. He was the British National discus champion on 9 occasions and broke the British record nineteen times, the last stood for 25 years. On competitive retirement, he became coach to the British Athletics Board and to the International Amateur Athletics Federation. He was a former regular soldier with the 1st East Anglian Regiment and the Army Physical Training Corps. After military service in Aden and at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, he attended Loughborough University and West Virginia University, USA the latter on a N.A.T.O. Fellowship. As an academic he lectured in schools, Colleges and Universities and among his many positions include being the Director of Physical Education and Sport at Sheffield University as well as being Professor of Sports Studies at Bucks New University and Professor of Sports & Exercise Science at Suffolk University. Bill is a published author having written a number of books as well as many articles in journals and newspapers on subjects ranging from health related fitness, sports performance, healthy ageing and lifestyle management. During the past 5 years he has presented talks to many organisations both in the UK and abroad including conferences and in the business community. During his long career he has served on numerous sports, health & well-being and fitness committees to include the Olympians and Active Suffolk. In 1992 he was awarded the MBE for Services to Sport.

Stuart Kirk

Guest Speaker - Environmental Science

As a professional environmental scientist, Stuart has over 35 years’ experience in water and environmental management and research, and most recently worked as a Lead Scientist in the Chief Scientist's Group of the Environment Agency (England). He is a highly engaging speaker with an infectious enthusiasm for the natural environment and sustainable living. Stuart’s deep expertise, wide scientific experience and passion for his subject matter is evident in his beautifully illustrated and interactive talks.

Sally Winstone

Crafter

I have an insatiable passion for crafting. I am always seeking out new materials and techniques and inspiration where ever I go. My preference is to use recycled and reclaimed materials that are sometimes discarded. I believe in using what you have or that you can redesign for another use. I have taught craft for about 15 years but have always done some sort of creating most of my life. I am self-taught and I enjoy sharing this expensive knowledge with others. I have a petals certificate to teach adults as well as a city n guilds in play work.

Ian Wright

Bridge Tutor

Ian Wright is a retired Police Officer, having served in the Metropolitan Police for thirty years. Prior to joining up he worked in a variety of jobs from bus conducting and shops to accountancy and insurance. He also took a degree in Environmental Science and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Maths and Physics, both at the University of East Anglia. Being a trained teacher led to Ian being involved in various aspects of training during his police service and he also worked with schools in Lambeth and Southwark. The last ten years of his police career were spent in recruitment and in a unit making enquiries and preparing cases for civil actions and inquests. Prior to joining the police Ian also served as a private soldier in the 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (T.A.V.R.). Ian has been playing bridge since he was at school and has played in the Sussex League for many years. Prior to the covid pandemic he taught bridge at Brighton College and initiated a project to teach mini- bridge in primary schools in the Brighton area. He has been teaching bridge on Fred Olsen cruises since 2018. When Ian retired from the police he formed his own training company and now runs courses to prepare candidates for assessment centres. Attendees are mostly university students but also include candidates for the police. Ian is very keen on the 'great outdoors' and regularly leads walks for his local Ramblers group and is a walks leader for HF Holidays. Ian lives in Brighton and London with his partner, Hilary, a retired librarian

A ukulele maestro, community leader, and passionate teacher with over a decade of plucking joy into people’s lives! From founding the now-thriving Wigan Ukulele Club (which began with just 14 players and now boasts 90+ members) to leading seniors’ ukulele groups through the University of the Third Age, Stephen has dedicated his life to turning total beginners into confident performers. With more than fifty public gigs a year and countless charity performances under his belt, his influence has helped spark a local ukulele revolution across Wigan and beyond. A proud Wigan resident, devoted husband to fellow uke-player Enid, and author of five books, Stephen’s creative spirit shines through in his music, poetry, and unwavering community spirit, once even performing for veterans at the request of the local MP, a highlight he holds dear. Whether strumming, teaching, or writing, Stephen brings warmth, rhythm, and heart to everything he does.

“An enjoyable British Cruise”

We both enjoy Ambassador Cruises. They have a definate British feel about them. Going from Tilbury makes our journey relatively easy. The booking in is very straight forward. A porter was ready to take our suitcases. It allowed us to concentrate on the paperwork which was very straightforward. The food is excellent with plenty of choice. The entertainment and talks are informative and enjoyable. We booked a second cruise in the summer, perhaps a little too early as we did not the free parking on offer now. Annoying.
