Molde

Traditions of Molde

by coach & on foot

Protected against northerly and westerly winds, Molde lies at the foot of the hills facing a fjord which opens out onto a magnificent panorama of mountain peaks. Molde has been called ‘The Town of Roses’ for over 100 years because of the town’s many rose gardens.

Your first stop will be to visit the Romsdal Open Air Museum, one of the largest and most comprehensive folk museums in Norway. It comprises of many traditional buildings, illustrating developments from the Viking era right up to the end of the 19th century. A local folk dance group consisting of youngsters in colourful national costumes will perform during your visit providing you with a fascinating insight to Norwegian culture.

Your journey then continues to the Varden viewpoint, from where you will get a fantastic view over the town of Molde, the fjord with its islands, and the famous mountainous scenery, before returning to the centre of the town passing the Town Hall, famous for its rooftop rose garden which is a glorious sight during summer. Above it, you will find Molde Cathedral with its separate tower surrounded by a garden of roses and other flowers. The cathedral was consecrated in 1957 with its double nave and Gothic styling and has many delightful stained glass windows and decorations.

After a short visit to the cathedral, you will return to your ship.
