Take a ride on Norway’s northernmost trainline through breathtaking Arctic landscapes.

The Ofoten Line (Ofotbanen) stretches 43km (26 miles) from Narvik to Bjørnfell on the Swedish border where it connects with the Swedish Ore Line, Malmbanan. Necessary to transport iron ore from the mines in Kiruna to the ice-free harbour of Narvik, construction of the railway began in the late 19th century, and it officially opened in 1902.

Your journey begins with a short coach transfer to Narvik station, where the Arctic Train, chartered exclusively for Ambassador Cruise Line, awaits. After settling into a seat, the Arctic Train will transport you through beautiful landscapes, including fjords, mountains and waterfalls, all the way up to Bjørnfjell on the Swedish border.

Along the way, learn about the railway’s interesting history, about the story of the Navvy Road, and listen to tales of how the railway was built in this harsh environment and witness the engineering marvels used to cross the challenging mountain terrain, including tunnels and bridges constructed by over 5,000 skilled labourers.

Your guides will also tell of how the line was of significant strategic importance during World War 2, when the Germans and the Allies fought for control of the iron ore supply, which was vital for the war industry.

During your journey, stops may be made to allow you to disembark and admire the scenery. On reaching the picturesque station at Bjørnfjell there will be a short stop before the return journey via the same route, during which you will be served a cup of tea or coffee and a cinnamon bun.

On arrival in Narvik, rejoin your coach for the transfer back to the pier.
