Lovely Obidos

Departing from the pier, an approximately 1h15min drive will take you through the beautiful Portuguese countryside to the medieval town of Óbidos.

The origins of this quaint little castle town, rising majestically above the lovely Gaeiras vineyards, are obscured in history but may date as far back as 308 BC. The town was conquered by the Portuguese in 1148. A century and a half later, passing through with his young bride, King Dinis gave her the town as a present as she had admired the ramparts ‘twinkling like a ribbon around a bouquet of shining white houses’. From then on, Óbidos has been given as the wedding gift to every Portuguese Queen.

Your visit to Óbidos will start with a short, guided walk, exploring the most picturesque streets. You will also visit the 17th-century Parish Church of Santa Maria, with its interior showing magnificent decorations in the famous blue-and-white tiles.

Reaching Pillory Square, your guide will explain how to continue exploring the narrow lanes lined with traditional shops selling all kinds of crafts and delicacies during your free time. You may choose to make your way to the imposing 12th-century castle, now converted into a ‘pousada’ or hotel; or explore the old lookout path on top of the wall encircling the city. Perhaps you would prefer to relax and soak up the atmosphere in one of the charming outdoor cafes.

Rejoining your coach, you return directly to the port.
