In Spain, Easter isn't just a long weekend; it's a whole week of tradition known as Semana Santa (Holy Week). This 14-night cruise aboard Ambition reaches Galicia for the final days of the celebrations, starting the Easter weekend in La Coruna and experiencing Easter Sunday in Vigo, before heading south in search of the sun.

While the UK is still shaking off the chill of March, you'll be enjoying mild days and café terraces in seven ports across Spain, Gibraltar and Portugal. You'll see the golden dome of Cadiz, the sunny streets of Malaga and Lisbon's pastel-coloured hills, all without a single plane journey. Note that some opening hours may be impacted during Semana Santa and Easter Sunday, but these ports offer an abundance of awe-inspiring sights, as well as some pre-arranged Destination Experiences (open for booking via My Ambassador Sailing around 6-8 weeks before departure).

CRUISE HIGHLIGHTS

La Coruna
Arriving in La Coruna right as Semana Santa builds to its finale sees the city take on a quieter, reflective mood. It’s a special time to be in this corner of Spain, experiencing it not as a tourist but as the locals do. Follow the seafront promenade - one of the longest in Europe - to the Tower of Hercules, the oldest Roman lighthouse in the world still in use. Then admire the rows of white glass balconies along Avenida de la Marina that earned La Coruna its nickname, the City of Glass.

Vigo
Vigo is Galicia's liveliest city. Arriving on Easter Sunday is no exception, as Semana Santa gives way to celebration with church bells ringing out and locals gathering for long lunches. Wander down to Oyster Street to watch vendors shuck oysters fresh from the Vigo Estuary, admire the neoclassical co-cathedral of Santa Maria or spot the striking bronze horses cascading above Praza de España. Venture inland to discover the storied pilgrim city, which is a particularly memorable adventure during Easter.

Cadiz
Almost entirely surrounded by the sea, Cadiz was founded more than 3,000 years ago. Its old quarter is a tangle of narrow lanes opening onto sun-filled plazas, watched over by the cathedral's golden dome, which is visible from the ship as you sail in. Climb Torre Tavira, one of the city's 100-plus watchtowers, for sweeping views across the rooftops, or wander Playa de la Caleta, the beach that once stood in for Cuba in a James Bond film. This time of year, you’ll find mild, sunny days that are ideal for exploring the old town at your own pace.

Malaga
Malaga is a sun-soaked corner of the Costa del Sol packed with history and culture. Pass the Roman Theatre at the foot of the Alcazaba, then climb up to the Moorish fortress for sweeping views over the city and harbour. Admire the unfinished tower of Malaga Cathedral, affectionately nicknamed La Manquita, or "the one-armed lady". This is also the birthplace of Pablo Picasso; visit the house where he was born, then see his work at the Picasso Museum a few streets away. Malaga offers a mix of old town charm and seaside life, best enjoyed at a relaxed pace.

Lisbon
One of the oldest capitals in the world, Lisbon’s pastel facades and cobbled hills spread across the historic neighbourhoods of Alfama, Bairro Alto and Baixa. Get lost in Alfama's maze of narrow lanes, then head down to Belém to admire the fortress-like Belém Tower and the elegant Jerónimos Monastery, both from Portugal's great age of discovery. Back in the centre, ride the ironwork Santa Justa Elevator, or wander the grand Rossio Square and the shop-lined Rua Augusta.
