Black River Safari with Lunch
Montego Bay

by coach/coaster bus, rivercraft & on foot
Departing Montego Bay by bus, your experience starts with a journey towards Reading and up the ‘Long Hill’. On your way, you will pass through rural villages including Anchovy, Montpelier, Ramble and Haddo. On reaching the south coast, your journey takes you through Bluefields, with its beautiful stretch of white sand beach, just east of the old town of Black River.
At the border of the parishes of Westmoreland and St. Elizabeth, you are likely to see local fishermen and women preparing and selling fish with a popular Jamaican staple called ‘Bammy’ – a type of flatbread made from cassava, a woody shrub of the spurge family.
Your scenic drive continues into the countryside to Black River, where you will embark on a rivercraft for a short safari. You will then sail through Jamaica’s largest wetland area: the Black River Lower Morass, where you may spot many species of bird whilst enjoying a commentary on the history and ecology of the area. The endangered American crocodile inhabits this area, and they are also frequently sighted during the ride.
Back on land you will visit the crocodile nursery, which is still been rebuilt since it was damaged during a recent hurricane. You will also visit the crocodile museum, where you will see an exhibition of crocodilian paraphernalia covering all aspects of crocodile life. Included are displays of marine turtles, the West Indian manatees and the Jamaican Hutia (Coney).
A traditional Jamaican lunch will be served at a local restaurant before the return drive to Montego Bay.
