Fire Lake & Ribeira Grande

Also known as Lagoa do Fogo, the Fire Lake is one of the top natural attractions in the Azores. Considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes on the islands, it is situated in the crater of an extinct volcano and is surrounded by mountains and lush vegetation.

Leaving Ponta Delgada, enjoy a scenic drive northwards along country roads, surrounded by pleasant views. Green meadows stretch away into the distance until you reach the oldest town on the island and the only settlement of any size on the north coast, Ribeira Grande.

You will have the option to spend time with your guide admiring the pretty town square and the local church, or to explore the quaint cobbled streets independently. Whatever your choice, you are sure to notice the interesting architecture that is typical of the island, comprising buildings constructed in basalt with Baroque and Manueline influences.

Your journey then continues to the viewpoint of Pico da Barrosa in the centre of the island, where you can enjoy views over the island below, including the magical Fire Lake surrounded by vegetation in a calm and beautiful setting.

Finally, visit one of the island’s pineapple plantations before returning to the port and your awaiting ship.
