Full Day to Furnas Valley

There is an aura of mystery around this lush green archipelago, made up of peaceful valleys abundant in exotic plants and enchanting lakes of stunning beauty set amid extinct volcanic craters. This full-day experience takes in the highlights of the island of São Miguel.

Your exploration begins with a scenic drive to colonial Ribeira Grande, the island’s oldest town, featuring Portuguese-influenced architecture. This charming town comprises narrow streets lined with buildings dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Of note is the 17th-century Espirito Santo Church, built in the Baroque style.

Continue along the north road to the Gorreana Tea Plantation. During a visit to the factory museum, you will learn about tea production and browse displays of machinery dating from the 19th century. Conclude your visit with a cup of their famous tea.

Your next stop is the viewpoint Pico do Ferro Belvedere, offering extensive views of the volcanic Furnas Valley. A short drive will bring you to Terra Nostra Botanical Gardens, where you can stroll along some of the lovely trails, plantations of hydrangea and camellia, extensive grottoes, and century-old trees. Here you will indulge in lunch, accompanied by a glass of wine or a soft drink at the Terra Nostra Casino.

Fully refreshed, rejoin your coach for the drive towards the Furnas Valley: a geothermal wonderland of 22 hot springs, mud pools, and geysers that emit steam and are heavy with the smell of sulphur. Admire the unique volcanic beauty, with its bubbling calderas, thermal springs and rich flora.

Heading back towards Ponta Delgada by the south road, you will pass Vila Franca do Campo, the first capital of the island, before pausing at a pineapple greenhouse to see first-hand how this delicious fruit is cultivated and marketed.
