Ponta Delgada on Foot
Ponta Delgada

on foot
Discover Ponta Delgada’s historical downtown area during this guided walking tour.
Having met your guide at the port, they will lead you on a walk towards the centre of Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores archipelago.
During your stroll, admire the historic surroundings, including the outstanding buildings that make up the town hall, originally the residence of a wealthy family. The adjacent Torre do Relógio is almost 30m (98ft) tall and dates from 1724. You will also see the Portas da Cidade – the symbol of the city. The remains of the city gate consist of three arches originally built at the port in 1783.
As you walk along Ponta Delgada's main boulevard, your guide will provide interesting facts and stories about the rich history and culture of the Azores. You will see the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião (Mother Church of San Sebastian): built in Manueline and Baroque styles, it is the main church of the city.
After your exploration of the centre, visit a gourmet wine shop where you will gain an insight into the traditions of local volcanic wines before enjoying a glass accompanied by an Azorean artisanal snack. The islands of the Azores were declared a UNESCO World Heritage wine site in 2004.
Finally, follow your guide on a short stroll to the farmers’ market to meet local growers and producers and get to know some of the local plants, fish and other delicacies, before returning to the port.
