Angra do Heroismo
Praia da Vitoria

by coach & on foot
This experience explores the island’s capital Angra do Heroismo, whose historic centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Angra became a city in 1534 and was the capital of the Azores until 1832. Queen Maria II bestowed the name Heroismo upon the town for the resistance it offered to the troops of King Miguel in 1829.
Departing from the port, your journey across the island will include two photostops – the first at the Serra do Cume viewpoint to enjoy views overlooking Praia da Vitória and the island’s interior, and then at Monte Brasil, which offers views overlooking Angra do Heroismo and the island’s spectacular southern coast.
Arriving in the city centre, you’ll continue on foot as you join your local guide on a walk exploring the city’s main highlights. Along the way, you will see the Duke’s Garden and the Gothic-inspired Sé Cathedral, dating from the late 16th century and known as the ‘mother church of the Azores’.
Following your visit to Angra, rejoin your coach for the return drive to Praia da Vitória, passing through some of the island’s southern villages such as Ribeirinha and São Sebastião.
