Billy Hitchen

Guest Speaker - Maritime History

Billy Hitchen left school unable to read or write and ran away to sea aged 14, joining the Merchant Navy in 1963. By 18, he had circumnavigated the globe six times, serving on famous liners with Cunard, P&O, and others, including as Quartermaster on the original Queen Mary. He later worked in the offshore oil industry in South America and West Africa before illness ended that career. Turning to deep-sea fishing, he became a skipper-owner operating around Britain, including pioneering shellfish fishing at St Kilda. With extensive maritime knowledge, he delivers engaging talks, and his bestselling autobiography was published in 2019.

Prue Knight

Bridge Tutor

Prue has been playing bridge for about 25 years and is a Life Master. She plays regularly at bridge congresses. In her professional life she was a teacher and so it was a natural progression to teach bridge. She teaches Standard Acol to beginners and intermediates and also minibridge to children in school. She also directs regularly at her local bridge club. Alongside her husband, Adrian, Prue has run bridge sessions on cruises since 2013, with very positive feedback from the passengers. Prue feels her teaching skills in addressing a range of experience and abilities has been invaluable in making her sessions relevant and fun. Prue chooses areas to teach which lend themselves to be meaningful to a range of abilities and carefully selects interesting hands to play.

Colin Ball

Ukulele Tutor

Colin Ball is a retired Engineer (Underground and Overground Railroad Projects). His work required him to teach employees to maintain and repair engineering systems. Colin was a STEMnet (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Ambassador working in London schools coaching teenagers in interview skills - (CRB checked) a voluntary unpaid position. He worked on the London Olympics delivering the TfL (Underground) Emergency Plan. 'Retirement' has allowed a total commitment to music. Colin teaches Ukulele in his music studio in Cheshire, has a 'One Man Show' and tutors’ performers in his local George Formby Ukulele Group. Colin also busks to support Macmillan Cancer Care. Colin Ball lives with his wife in South Cheshire. He has one son and one granddaughter. Colin is a member of the George Formby Society and regularly contributes articles to their periodical magazine 'The Vellum'

Many of the projects will be themed around ports the ship will visit.

ORCA is one of the UK’s leading whale and dolphin conservation charities, dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises around the world. Ocean Conservationists will be showcasing the incredible diversity of wildlife that can be spotted from the deck, helping everyone learn more about the marine environment around them whilst collecting vital data about whales, dolphins and porpoises to contribute to their protection. Whilst on board, the team will be delivering activities to help guests learn more about these amazing animals as well as the threats they face, including the Ambassador & ORCA pledge and the first ever cruise "Anti-whaling" campaign.

“Love Ambassador especially staff, but feel let down by numerous issues 😔”

The booking agent Julie was awesome, very professional and extremely polite, but my previous two cruises back to back had me change rooms 4 times, I wrote a letter of disappointment rather than complaint and gave it to the reception desk on the cruise, the two cruises totalled 32 days (16 days each) no response was received from ambassador, no compensation, no anything. I was told on this booking I should have contacted ambassador via email post previous cruise but the staff on the cruise never suggested that. I like ambassador as this is now my 6th cruise but I do feel they should look after patrons especially if they have been inconvenienced over and above what is normal.
