If you’re looking to experience Norway during ‘light winter’ where the days are longer, the skies are crisp and the chance of snow is high, March is the ideal time for an Arctic adventure. Explore quaint Arctic towns, enjoy thrilling winter activities, experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the northern wilderness and search for the elusive Northern Lights. This is a journey beyond the ordinary, where Norway adopts that typical Arctic postcard aesthetic that you need to see to truly appreciate.
But this itinerary is about much more than a winter wonderland backdrop. Each port is carefully selected for its history, culture and outdoor adventure, and with longer daylight hours there’s plenty of time to explore ashore. Of course, the opportunity to seek out the Northern Lights is very much part of the picture as the evening draws in, even if the odd snow shower means the sky can be a bit more unpredictable.

Tromsø
Once the starting point for many Arctic expeditions, Tromsø now offers a rich cultural scene, vibrant festivals and stunning fjord landscapes. March brings beautiful conditions to the city, with longer daylight hours to enjoy a relaxed cable car ride to the mountain top, snowshoeing or dog sledding across the snowy terrain for a more exhilarating activity. Tromsø is renowned as one of the best ports in Norway for spotting the Northern Lights, so keep your eyes peeled as the evening draws in.
Alta
Known as the City of Northern Lights, Alta is a key port for any Arctic sailing. Marvel at the Northern Lights cathedral, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow, spend time with a local Sami family to learn about their traditions and experience Alta’s igloo hotel built entirely out of snow and ice. This time of year creates an idyllic snowy scene in Alta, coupled with the possibility of an aurora sighting above the snow-laden paths.
Harstad
Harstad offers some of the best of Norway's history, culture and natural beauty. Explore historic churches and fortifications, visit an underground waterpark and have the chance to enjoy breathtaking scenery under the Northern Lights (if conditions allow!). A layer of snow settled across the landscape makes March a particularly striking time to explore the town’s historic sites and take in the views.
Narvik
Narvik is a standout Norwegian destination. With snow common in March, you’ll likely have the chance to cross country ski at nearby Narvikfjellet, or if you’re looking for something more relaxed, take a saunter along the frosted shores of Sandvika. Bill Tancred
Guest Speaker - Sport
William Bill Tancred is a leading sports administrator, academic and former international athlete. He competed at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics in the discus and won bronze and silver medals in successive Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. He was the British National discus champion on 9 occasions and broke the British record nineteen times, the last stood for 25 years. On competitive retirement, he became coach to the British Athletics Board and to the International Amateur Athletics Federation.
He was a former regular soldier with the 1st East Anglian Regiment and the Army Physical Training Corps. After military service in Aden and at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, he attended Loughborough University and West Virginia University, USA the latter on a N.A.T.O. Fellowship. As an academic he lectured in schools, Colleges and Universities and among his many positions include being the Director of Physical Education and Sport at Sheffield University as well as being Professor of Sports Studies at Bucks New University and Professor of Sports & Exercise Science at Suffolk University.
Bill is a published author having written a number of books as well as many articles in journals and newspapers on subjects ranging from health related fitness, sports performance, healthy ageing and lifestyle management. During the past 5 years he has presented talks to many organisations both in the UK and abroad including conferences and in the business community.
During his long career he has served on numerous sports, health & well-being and fitness committees to include the Olympians and Active Suffolk.
In 1992 he was awarded the MBE for Services to Sport.
Stuart Kirk

As a professional environmental scientist, Stuart has over 35 years’ experience in water and environmental management and research, and most recently worked as a Lead Scientist in the Chief Scientist’s Group of the Environment Agency (England). He is a highly engaging speaker with an infectious enthusiasm for the natural environment and sustainable living. Stuart’s deep expertise, wide scientific experience and passion for his subject matter is evident in his beautifully illustrated and interactive talks.

I have an insatiable passion for crafting.
I am always seeking out new materials and techniques and inspiration where ever I go. My preference is to use recycled and reclaimed materials that are sometimes discarded.
I believe in using what you have or that you can redesign for another use.
I have taught craft for about 15 years but have always done some sort of creating most of my life.
I am self-taught and I enjoy sharing this expensive knowledge with others.
I have a petals certificate to teach adults as well as a city n guilds in play work.
Ian Wright
Bridge Tutor
Ian Wright is a retired Police Officer, having served in the Metropolitan Police for thirty years. Prior to joining up he worked in a variety of jobs from bus conducting and shops to accountancy and insurance. He also took a degree in Environmental Science and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Maths and Physics, both at the University of East Anglia.
Being a trained teacher led to Ian being involved in various aspects of training during his police service and he also worked with schools in Lambeth and Southwark. The last ten years of his police career were spent in recruitment and in a unit making enquiries and preparing cases for civil actions and inquests. Prior to joining the police Ian also served as a private soldier in the 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (T.A.V.R.).
Ian has been playing bridge since he was at school and has played in the Sussex League for many years. Prior to the covid pandemic he taught bridge at Brighton College and initiated a project to teach mini- bridge in primary schools in the Brighton area. He has been teaching bridge on Fred Olsen cruises since 2018.
When Ian retired from the police he formed his own training company and now runs courses to prepare candidates for assessment centres. Attendees are mostly university students but also include candidates for the police. Ian is very keen on the ‘great outdoors’ and regularly leads walks for his local Ramblers group and is a walks leader for HF Holidays. Ian lives in Brighton and London with his partner, Hilary, a retired librarian

From founding the now-thriving Wigan Ukulele Club (which began with just 14 players and now boasts 90+ members) to leading seniors’ ukulele groups through the University of the Third Age, Stephen has dedicated his life to turning total beginners into confident performers. With more than fifty public gigs a year and countless charity performances under his belt, his influence has helped spark a local ukulele revolution across Wigan and beyond. A proud Wigan resident, devoted husband to fellow uke-player Enid, and author of five books, Stephen’s creative spirit shines through in his music, poetry, and unwavering community spirit, once even performing for veterans at the request of the local MP, a highlight he holds dear. Whether strumming, teaching, or writing, Stephen brings warmth, rhythm, and heart to everything he does.

European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) and what this means for Ambassador’s guests
In alignment with the latest guidance, we can confirm that guests sailing on board Ambassador Cruise Line’s no-fly sailings will not be impacted by the European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) during their trip.
This new digital border system, which first began on 12 October 2025, changes the requirements for British citizens travelling to a Schengen Area country with travellers using a UK passport now required to register biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo, upon arrival.
However, cruise passengers embarking and disembarking a sailing in the UK are not required to go through this new process.
This means that guests of Ambassador’s no-fly sailings – which all depart from and return to one of seven UK regional ports, namely, London Tilbury, Newcastle, Dundee, Liverpool, Belfast, Bristol Royal Portbury and Portsmouth – need not fret about the new EES requirements before, during or after travelling with us.
Customer feedback consistently highlights how much our guests value being able to start their holiday with a minimum of hassle, given the convenience of embarking from a port that’s close to home – meaning no need to worry about airport queues, baggage restrictions or flight cancellations. The fact that guests on board any of Ambassador’s no-fly sailings will now also not be impacted by the new EES requirements is yet another advantage.
With an array of itineraries to breathtaking destinations across the Schengen Area, from sun-washed Gijon on Spain’s northern coast to Norway’s Alta, a prime Northern Lights hunting destination, Ambassador’s no-fly sailings allow guests to enjoy the ‘warmest welcome at sea’ with the added benefit of not needing to worry about the new EES system.

When will I get my tickets?
Ambassador is a ticketless cruise line, so we will not issue guests with a physical cruise ticket. Instead, once within 90 days of departure (but no later than 24 hours before sailing), all guests are required to submit their API (Advance Passenger Information) to us via our website, by visiting our My Ambassador Sailing facility or via the Ambassador Cruise Line App.
Once this information has been submitted, you will be able to log in to ‘My Ambassador Sailing’ to check in online and to download your boarding pass and final documentation once online check-in opens, 72 hours before sailing.
What is the dress code on board?
During the day, we suggest that you wear casual clothing for your comfort. For the evenings on board, every day the Daily Programme suggests, as a guide, a mode of dress for that particular evening’s events.
There are generally two ‘formal’ or gala nights planned every 7-12 nights when many gentlemen wear dinner jackets, although a lounge suit is quite acceptable. Ladies on these occasions have a chance to dress up and often opt for evening or cocktail dresses. Please note that jeans, T-Shirts, shorts and open neck shirts are not permitted in the main restaurant on Formal or Gala evenings.
On evenings proposed as ‘smart’, a suit or smart jacket and trousers, with or without a tie, for the men is suggested and the ladies have further opportunities to look elegant in cocktail dresses or trouser suits.
A ‘casual’ recommendation often covers evenings spent in port or when a special event such as a deck party is scheduled. In these cases, the choice of dress is left entirely to you.
As general guidance, the number of formal nights onboard is as follows:
2-5 Nights -1 formal night
6-20 Nights - 2 formal nights
21-41 Nights - 3 formal nights
Over 42 Nights - 5 formal nights

What type of plug sockets are used on board?
Cabins are fitted with UK 3 pin sockets with some allowing for USB charging.
Do you arrange car parking at the ports?
We offer car parking all UK departure ports, with prices starting from £8.50 per car per night.
If booked directly with us, parking can be added via My Ambassador Sailing however if you are booked via a travel agent, parking must be added and paid via the booking agent.
Please note car parking must be booked at the very latest 2 working days before sailing and is subject to availability. You will not be able to pay on arrival if you have not pre-booked and will be refused entry to the car park.
